The Hungarian Energy and Public Utilities Regulatory Office (MEKH) has launched a tender to allocate capacity on the medium- and high-voltage network, enabling an increase in wind power generation capacity (MEKH press release, 01/09/2026).
According to MEKH, applicants can submit bids for nine network nodes across six districts, with a total of 702 MVA of distributable feed-in capacity available. The earliest possible grid connection date is 30 September 2030, while connections cannot take place later than 30 September 2032, the regulator said.
The tender follows a nationwide public market survey assessing anticipated grid connection requirements for wind power projects and the readiness of planned investments.
In 2026, the Hungarian government introduced a new energy policy objective that identifies wind power as a strategic priority. Under the new policy framework, annual grid connection capacity tenders will be dedicated exclusively to wind projects, with a target of adding at least 4 GW of new wind capacity between 2026 and 2030.
The initiative comes as Hungary seeks to strengthen its energy security, particularly in the wake of recent events. During the summer of 2026, a severe heatwave and drought caused the Danube to reach record-low levels, prompting the Paks nuclear power plant to progressively reduce generation and temporarily shut down several units because of insufficient cooling water. This posed a significant risk to Hungary’s electricity supply, as the plant accounts for around 40% of the country’s electricity generation (KEI, 28/08/2026).
Hungary is increasingly relying on renewable energy sources for power generation. Thanks to rising capacities, solar covered 27% of the power mix in 2025 (up from 7% in 2020), according to our data (Enerdata Global Energy Research). Wind power remains marginal, with a 2% share.
