Russian state-run nuclear company Rosatom has started hot functional tests at the second unit (Novovoronezh II-2, also identified as Novovoronezh's unit N°7) of the Novovoronezh-2 nuclear power plant, which is currently under construction and expected to be commissioned later in 2018. This safety and reliability test is the most important stage of commissioning and precedes the start-up of the unit.
The Novovoronezh II nuclear power plant is located on the bank of the Don river, 42 km south of Voronezh in the Voronezh Oblast of Russia, on the site of the existing Novovoronezh nuclear power plant. The facility now includes two 1,114 MW AES-2006 pressurized water reactors of the VVER type. The first unit (Novovoronezh II-1) was put into commercial operation in February 2017 and the second one has now started the testing phase. Two 1,170 MW other units (namely Novovoronezh II-3 and Novovoronezh II-4) are planned in the years to come.
