Greece's latest solar-wind auction attracts contrasted interest

Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) of Greece has announced that the solar PV tender was undersubscribed, since the institution received 44 bids for solar projects with a total capacity of 149 MW, representing more than half of the proposed capacity (287 MW). Conversely, the wind tender was largely oversubscribed with 16 bids with a total capacity of 491 MW, compared to 225 MW offered. The RAE expects to select winners in mid-December 2019.

RAE has received bids for the Competitive Bidding Procedures from 7 October to 4 November 2019. Bids for solar PV were opened to projects with an installed capacity of up to 20 MW with a maximum price of €66.02/MWh, while bids for wind projects were capped at 50 MW and a maximum price of €68.25/MWh.

Greece aims to raise its installed PV capacity from around 2.6 GW in 2018 to 6.9 GW by 2030. The first solar-plus-wind auction held in April 2019 was oversubscribed, attracting 638 MW bids compared to an initial 600 MW of capacity on offer. However, the latest Greece's 600 MW solar and wind auctions of July 2019 was undersubscribed, with RAE awarding only 54% of the initially-planned volumes (322 MW).
