Greece will launch a 1 GW solar and wind energy tender in September 2022

The Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) will launch a tender for 1 GW of solar and wind projects on 5 September 2022. The country aims to contract 1 GW of solar capacity, with a focus on systems larger than 1 MW, as well as wind projects above 60 kW in size.

Project developers must submit their application bids by 8 August 2022 and will be told if they are eligible on 25 August 2022. Bidding will start at €54/MWh for solar PV systems and €63/MWh for wind power systems. Winning solar projects will need to link to the grid within 30 months after the auction date, while winning wind farms will need to be completed within 36 months.

RAE has set the tender’s subscription rule at 80%. This is applicable to each technology separately, which means that for the tender to award 100 MW of PV capacity, 180 MW of solar capacity should compete for selection.

In 2021, solar represented 17% of Greece’s installed capacity with 3.5 GW. Wind represented 22% of the country’s installed capacity with 4.5 GW. By 2030, Greece aims to reach 50% of renewables (37% in 2021) and to phase out coal and lignite in its power mix.
