The Greek government has decided to shift away from feed-in-tariffs and plans to launch several competitive auctions for wind and solar power starting from July 2018 until 2020.
Two auctions will be held on 2 July 2018, offering 300 MW of wind capacity (wind projects ranging between 3 MW and 50 MW) and 300 MW of solar capacity. The solar auction will be divided in two categories: 70 MW targeting systems below 1 MW, and 230 MW for solar parks between 1 MW and 20 MW. Price caps have been set at €85/MWh for the smaller solar systems, at €80/MWh for the bigger solar projects and at €90/MWh for wind. Similar tenders will to be held in 2019 and 2020, along with mixed tenders of 400 MW for the two technologies. The auctions are expected to attract €2-3bn of investments.
Greece enacted a new renewable energy law in 2016 and ran a 40 MW pilot solar auction in December 2016, with winning bids ranging between €79.97 and €104/MWh.
