Greece plans a 1 GW interconnector to link its mainland to the Dodecanese

Greece's Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) has launched a tender for the development of a 1 GW subsea interconnector project, which will link Corinth in Greece’s mainland to the island of Kos in the Dodecanese Islands. The parallel cables (500 MW each) will run for 380 km.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2027, as selected contractors will have 36 months to carry out the works. This line will be Greece’s second high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power interconnection after the electricity interconnection between Crete and Attica. The project is expected to require an investment of €630m for the power lines and €789m for the converters.

ADMIE aims to connect all the country's major islands to the mainland by 2030 and the TSO is currently developing or considering several power transmission projects, including a 400 kV line in Thessaly, new interconnections with Italy, Albania, Turkey, Cyprus and Israel.
