Greece launches joint 600 MW solar-wind electricity auction

The Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) has announced the country’s first joint solar and wind energy auction, which will tender 600 MW of capacity and will start with a ceiling bid of €64.72/MWh. Interested bidders will have to submit their offers by 27 March 2019 and the auction results will be unveiled on 15 April 2019.

To be eligible, the proposed solar projects must have a minimum capacity of 20 MW, even though the capacity can be aggregated as long as it contains at least two solar parks connected to the grid through a single substation. As for wind projects, they must have a minimal capacity of 50 MW, even if that size can be aggregated from separate projects using grid connection access through the same substation. Clusters of joint PV and wind projects are also eligible, as long as they have a total capacity of 50 MW and use a single substation. In addition, wind and PV power projects previously granted "strategic investment" status can also participate in the auction.

The auction is being deployed of Greece’s renewables masterplan for 2018-2020 unveiled in February 2018, according to which RAE planned to auction 300 MW of wind, 300 MW of solar PV and 400 MW of combined solar PV and wind capacity via a joint auction for both 2018 and 2019. There was no joint auction in 2018 and in order to catch up, RAE decided to auction up to 600 MW for 2019 instead of the 400 MW originally envisaged in the masterplan.
