The solar steam generator manufacturing company GlassPoint Solar and the US oil and gas producer Aera Energy have signed an agreement for the development of an 850 MW solar thermal facility at the Belridge oilfield in Bakersfield in Kern County, California (United States).
The project will comprise a 850 MWth solar thermal facility, producing 12 mboe/year of steam and a 26.5 MWe solar PV plant. Aera Energy will use solar steam and solar electricity to power the oil field operations and enhance oil recovery at the Belridge oil field, one of the largest in the United States with a current output of 76,000 bbl/d. The solar project is offset 4.87 bcf/year of natural gas (137 mcm/year) and avoid the emission of 376 ktCO2/year.
GlassPoint is already building a similar 1 GW solar thermal project at the Miraah oil field in Oman, which started to produce steam in November 2017.
