Germany increases maximum rates for renewable energy tenders in 2024

The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur, BNetzA) has published the maximum values for the renewable energy tenders scheduled for 2024, aiming to increase increase the profitable operation of newly planned plants. The maximum rates were set at €7.35c/kWh for onshore wind energy, €7.37c/kWh for ground-mounted solar installations and €10.50c/kWh for rooftop solar installations.

The measure comes as a response to the increased costs for the construction, operation and financing of the plants since the last legal provision, considering that the previous maximum rates where set at €5.88c/kWh for onshore wind energy, €5.90c/kWh for ground-mounted solar systems and €8.91c/kWh for rooftop solar systems. According to the agency, the determination of maximum levels for biomass, biomethane and innovation tenders will also be examined in a timely manner.

By the end of 2022, Germany generated 578 TWh of electricity, with a power mix still highly dependent on thermal sources with a 57% share. The share of renewables reached 46% in 2022, of which 22% was for wind and 11% for solar).
