Germany awards only 58% of the capacity in a 1.3 GW onshore wind tender

The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA) has released the results of the latest round of the tender for 1,320 MW of onshore wind projects, with a bid deadline on 1 October 2022. The auction capacity attracted 87 bids totalling 772 MW, which were all selected with prices ranging from €5.76c/kWh to €5.88c/kWh (weighted average of €5.84c/kWh, a level comparable to the previous round). The maximum value was set at €5.88c/kWh in this round. Most of the projects will be developed in Lower Saxony (208 MW, 30 awards), Schleswig-Holstein (179 MW, 20 awards) and North Rhine-Westphalia (127 MW, 11 awards).

The tender was 58% subscribed, compared to 71% in the previous auction. Indeed, in June 2022, 114 projects totalling 931 MW won a contract in a tender for 1,320 MW of onshore wind. Germany was aiming to auction 4 GW of onshore wind capacity in 2022 divided in three rounds through the year. In total, only 3 GW was effectively awarded.

In addition, the regulator received 100 bids totalling 101 MW for a biomass tender with a tendered volume of 286 MW. 11 bids were excluded and 69 projects totalling 78 MW won a contract, with prices ranging from €14.2c/kWh to €18c/kWh. Finally, 2 bids totalling 3.5 MW were submitted and subsequently selected in an biomass auction with an advertised volume of 152 MW.
