Germany’s federal network regulator the Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA) has announced the awards of its latest offshore wind auction granting a total combined capacity of 2.5 GW to TotalEnergies and EnBW after agreeing to pay just over €3bn in total lease fees. The offshore tenders for areas that have not been centrally pre-examined on the bidding date of 1 June 2024 received two bids, with the first of them being made by Offshore Wind One GmbH (French TotalEnergies and German RWE), was awarded the contract for area 1.5 GW N-11.2 at a bid value of €1.3m, with RWE withdrawing from the consortium due to economic viability reasons leaving TotalEnergies to pay almost €2bn in total lease fees. The second bid was made by German utility EnBW, securing the 1GW N-12.3 site in the German North Sea with a bid of €1.05bn. The average award value per gigawatt in 2023 was €1.8bn. With the award of the contract, the successful bidders will be entitled to a planning approval procedure for the construction and operation of wind turbines on the site as well as the right to connection and grid connection capacity.
At the end of 2023, Germany had a total installed capacity of 245 GW, of which offshore wind capacity accounted for 8.4 GW.
