Germany awards contract for the closure of Onyx's Zolling coal plant (472 MW)

The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA) has released the results of the sixth tender for the early closure of hard coal- and small-scale lignite-fired power plants under the Act to Reduce and End Coal-Fired Power Generation. The auction for 698 MW of coal-fired capacity received two bids and one response totalling 472 MW with a price of €98/MW was accepted. The power plant that won a contract for a complete phase-out by 21 February 2025 is unit 5 of the Onyx coal-fired power plant in Zolling, owned and operated by Onyx Power, which is a subsidiary of US private equity firm Riverstone Holdings. In addition, the regulator has ordered a statutory reduction for the capacity of Volkswagen's HKW West coal-fired plant (277 MW) to 227 MW. The plant, which was excluded from the tender for formal reasons, will have to stop burning coal starting from 2025.

The company possesses three coal-fired plant in Germany, including Wilhelmshaven (830 MW), Zolling (472 MW), and Farge (350 MW), which is due to close on 31 October 2022 after obtaining a contract in July 2021, and one in the Netherlands (Maasvlakte, 800 MW). The four plants were sold by Engie to Onyx Power in 2019. Germany plans to hold the next and final round on 1 June 2023.
