Germany awards 1 GW of contracts for early coal-fired power plant closure

The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA) has released the results of the fifth tender for the early closure of hard coal- and small-scale lignite-fired power plants under the Coal Power Generation Termination Act. The auction for 1,223 MW of coal-fired capacity was under-subscribed and 6 bids totalling 1,016 MW, with prices ranging from €0/MW to €107,000/MW, were selected (average volume-weighted award value of 45,000/MW). One bid was excluded due to late submission. The 6 power plants that have been awarded contracts for a complete phase-out by 27 May 2024 include EnBW's 517 MW RDK-7 unit in Karlsruhe and GKM's 435 MW unit-8 in Mannheim, along with four smaller captive units (25 MW, 20 MW, 16 MW and 2 MW) operated by industrial companies. Two additional rounds will be held until June 2024.
