German onshore wind tender undersubscribed once again

The Germany Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur, BNetzA), which regulates the energy sector, has published the results of two tenders for 826 MW of onshore wind and 96 MW of solar projects, with a bidding date set for 1 June 2020.

The onshore wind auction was undersubscribed, as 62 offers with a total capacity of 468 MW were submitted, and 61 bids totalling 464 MW were awarded. The value of the submitted bids ranged between €5.90c/kWh and €6.20c/kWh, with an average bidding price of €6.14c/kWh, which is higher than in the previous round (€6.07c/kWh).

The solar auction for 96 MW was oversubscribed as 101 offers with a total capacity of 447 MW were submitted, and 21 bids totalling 99.6 MW were awarded. The value of the submitted bids ranged between €4.90c/kWh and €5.40c/kWh, with an average bidding price of €5.27c/kWh, which is higher than the previous round (€5.18c/kWh).

In May 2020, Germany's government reached an agreement over standard distance for wind turbines and the abolition of the solar cap. The final decisions on rules governing the minimum distance between homes and wind turbines will be taken at the state government level. In addition, federal authorities lifted the existing cap of 52 GW on the country’s cumulative solar capacity.

Germany intends to reach a 65% share of renewable energies in electricity consumption by 2030. As of May 2020, Germany's wind capacity reaches 61 GW and solar 49 GW, accounting respectively for 27% and 22% of the total capacity.
