German group seeks approval for a 750 MW floating wind project in Italy

Regolo Rinnovabili, an affiliate of the German group BayWa r.e., has submitted an application to the Port Authority of Mazara del Vallo for a 30-year maritime concession to build and operate a 750 MW floating wind project offshore Sicily in Italy. The project, located at a minimum distance of 44 km from the coast, is expected to comprise around 50 turbines with a capacity of 15 MW each, with an accompanying cable and grid infrastructure.

Italy has currently no operational offshore wind capacity. Onshore wind accounts for 10% of Italy’s capacity mix, with 11.8 GW as of end-2022.
