The American companies Georgia Power and Southern Nuclear will take over and assume the management of the Vogtle nuclear plant expansion from the original contractor Westinghouse by the end of July 2017 as per the newly signed service agreement.
As per the expansion project, Georgia Power and Southern Nuclear will build Vogtle-3 and Vogtle-4. The two AP1000 reactors rated 1,117 MW each are under construction and are expected to be commissioned in 2019 and 2020, respectively. EPC contractor Westinghouse has been hit by financial setbacks from the projects (additional costs of US$4bn) and finally filed for bankruptcy in March 2017, listing assets of US$4.3bn and liabilities of US$9.4bn among about 35,000 creditors.
The Vogtle plant is located in the State of Georgia (US) near Waynesboro and has two operating pressurized water reactors manufactured by Westinghouse rated 1,215 MW each, which were commissioned in 1987 and 1989. It is jointly owned by Georgia Power (45.7%), Oglethorpe Power Corporation (30%), the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (22.7%) and Dalton Utilities (1.6%). It is one of Georgia Power's two nuclear facilities and is one of the three nuclear facilities in the US Southern Company system.
