Homer City Redevelopment (HCR), the project company in charge of the former Homer City coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania (United States), has presented plans to invest over US$10bn to transform the site into a large data center campus, that would be powered by 4.5 GW of gas-fired capacities.
The construction of the project will be led by Kiewit Power Constructors as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, using existing infrastructures from the legacy Homer City power plant, including transmission lines connected to the PJM and NYISO power grids, substations and water access. GE Vernova will provide seven high efficiency 7HA.02 hydrogen-enabled, gas-fired turbines, with the first deliveries expected to begin in 2026. Construction of the site is expected to commence in 2025 and is expected to begin producing power by 2027. It will rely on natural gas produced in the Marcellus Shale Region (US).
Located only 50 miles (80 km) east of Pittsburgh, Homer CIty was the largest coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania, consisting of three units totalling 1,915 MW. After nearly 55 years of operations, the power plant was permanently decommissioned on 1 July 2023.
