France selects location for the country’s second floating wind project

The French government has confirmed the location of the country’s second 250 MW floating wind project, along with its subsequent expansion, in the Gulf of Fos in Southern France. The project, which should be operational by 2031, will consist of 10 to 20 wind turbines located more than 22 km offshore in the Zone 2 designated after a public consultation in 2021. A future expansion of 500 MW is planned within the same zone, with both projects occupying less than half of the designated area. Another 250 MW wind project and its 500 MW expansion have already been assigned to the Zone 1 off the coast of Narbonne in March 2022.

The exact location of the wind farm will be determined in the coming months and incorporated into the tender specifications for the pre-selected candidates in early 2022. The specifications will be reviewed by the Energy Regulation Commission in summer 2023 and subsequently published. The winner will be selected by the government in spring 2024. France aims to develop 40 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040.
