The French government has selected areas to build two offshore wind projects off the Atlantic coast of France following a public consultation. The plants will be located off the island of Oléron, more than 35 km from the coast, beyond the limits of the Marine Nature Park of the Gironde estuary and the Pertuis sea. The country intends to initiate a competitive dialogue for the first project with the aim to select a winner in early 2024. Commissioning is scheduled for early 2030s. The first project, with a capacity of 1 GW, may be supplemented later by a second plant of 1 GW, which could have either fixed foundations or floating wind turbines anchored to the ocean floor. In June 2022, an offshore wind project, a 480 MW offshore plant located near Saint Nazaire, was connected to grid for the first time in the country. France targets an offshore wind capacity of 5 GW by 2028.
