France awards 931 MW in oversubscribed onshore wind tender

The French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) has selected the winners of its latest wind tender, allocating 931 MW over 54 onshore wind projects across the country. The fifth PPE2 auction had a 925 MW target and it was largely oversubscribed, receiving a total of 101 bids for a cumulative submitted capacity of 1.6 GW. The successful projects had an average price of €86.94/MWh (+2% compared to the previous auction), with 56% of the capacity located in the regions of Nouvelle-Aquitaine (226 MW, 12 projects), Grand-Est (187 MW, 7 projects) and Hauts-de-France (111 MW, 7 projects). The projects are expected to start operations before November 2026, while the next round of onshore wind tender is scheduled to open on 4 December with a capacity of 925 MW.

The fifth PPE2 tranche 925 MW has been the third fully subscribed renewable energy auction in France, with the last two allocating around 1 GW of wind and 1.5 GW of solar projects earlier in 2023.

Wind accounts for nearly 15% of France’s installed capacity with 21 GW (2022). The country added 2.4 GW of wind capacity in 2022, compared to 1.3 GW/year between 2014 and 2021. France targets between 21.8 GW and 26 GW of onshore wind capacity in 2023.
