Finland will launch tenders for 6 GW of offshore wind as of 2023-2024

The Finnish state-owned company Metsahallitus has announced plans to launch tenders for five offshore wind projects in Finland, with a total capacity of 6 GW, in 2023 and 2024. Two projects are planned to be opened for tendering in September and October of 2023, and two additional two projects in 2024. Decision on the fifth project will be made at a later date.

Zoning initiatives for the first five projects have been submitted to the local municipalities of Siikajoki, Hailuoto, Pyhäjoki and Raahe, Närpiö and Kristiinankaupunki, all situated on the west coast of Finland. The projects are expected to become operational in the 2030s.

At the end of 2021, Finland had only about 73 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (and 3.2 GW of onshore wind). The country currently has 4 GW of wind projects under construction and nearly 22 GW under development.
