ExxonMobil moves forward with sixth 250 kb/d offshore development (Guyana)

ExxonMobil has made a final investment decision for the Whiptail development offshore Guyana, after receiving government and regulatory approvals. The US$12.7bn Whiptail project, which will include up to 10 drill centres with 48 production and injection wells, is expected to add approximately 250,000 bbl/d of capacity by the end of 2027. The Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel for the Whiptail project, to be named Jaguar, is under construction.

Three FPSOs – the Liza Destiny, Liza Unity and Prosperity – are currently operating offshore Guyana and are producing more than 600,000 bbl/d. Construction is also underway on FPSOs for the Yellowtail and Uaru projects, with Yellowtail expected to start production in 2025 and Uaru in 2026. Each will have a gross production capacity of approximately 250,000 bbl/d.

ExxonMobil affiliate ExxonMobil Guyana is operator and holds 45% interest in the Stabroek block, together with Hess Guyana Exploration (30%) and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana (25%). In March 2024, ExxonMobil and CNOOC launched arbitration proceedings against Chevron’s proposed takeover of Hess, claiming they have a right of first refusal on any sale of the Stabroek block.
