Vietnamese national power utility Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has invested a total of VND 480,000bn (US$22.3bn) in the development of power plants and electricity grid over the last five years. On the power generation side, the company has commissioned 34 power plants with a combined capacity of 9,852 MW and started the construction of a further 10 power projects, including the 2,400 MW Son la hydropower project, which was completed three years earlier than scheduled. On the grid side, EVN has connected 865 transformer stations and transmission lines, including the 500 kV Pleiku-My Phuoc-Cau Bong transmission line and the 220 kV Dak Nong- Phuoc Long-Binh Long transmission line to improve north-south electricity transmission.
Over the 2016-2020 period, EVN plans to raise VND 600,000 bn (around US$27.9bn) through domestic and foreign bonds and official development assistance loans. The group aims to complete 11 power plants totalling 5,819 MW.
