European Commission clears Greece's renewable energies auction scheme

The European Commission (EC) has endorsed the Greek government's auction scheme for high-efficiency cogeneration and renewable energies, considering that it is in line with the EU state aid rules such as the 2014 Guidelines on State Aid for Environmental Protection and Energy. The country currently plans to reach a target of 18% of its domestic energy supplies from renewable energy sources by 2020.

Greece intends to set up separate auctions to support solar and wind projects in 2018 to determine their market potential. Joint tenders for both solar and wind facilities would be held in 2019 in order to increase competition and reduce the final energy cost for consumers. State support for other renewable technologies will be subject to auctions as soon as they become more mature in the Greek electricity market, i.e. when they reach a predefined level of market penetration. Greece will evaluate the bidding processes in 2020, before designing bidding processes for the period 2021-2025.
