Europe invested €43bn in wind power in 2016

According to WindEurope’s Financing and Investment Trends 2016 study, renewable project developers invested a total of €43bn in the construction of new wind parks, refinancing operations, project acquisitions and public market fundraising in 2016, a 22% increase from €35bn in 2015.

New asset financing for wind power projects reached €27.6bn in 2016, including a record €18.2bn in offshore wind power. Onshore wind investments declined for the first time in five years (-5%), reaching €9.4bn. A total of €5.2bn were raised in major initial public offerings (IPOs) in 2016, representing the highest level of issuance in the last seven years.

The United Kingdom was the largest market in 2016 with €12.7bn raised for new onshore and offshore projects, followed by Germany with €5.3bn, Belgium and Norway: these four countries accounted for 80% of the new capacity financed. Investments in Southern and Eastern Europe remain

low due to regulatory and macroeconomic constraints
