The European Commission has approved a €545m (US$638m) package to accelerate Africa's clean energy transition. The package is expected to finance projects supporting electrification, modernise power grids, and improve access to renewables. The projects include: the Dorsale Est high-voltage transmission line in Côte d’Ivoire (€359m), a rural electrification project in Cameroon (€59m), increasing affordable renewable energy in Somalia (€45.5m), expanding electrification in Madagascar (€33m), unlocking wind and hydro energy in Lesotho (€26m), supporting low-emission energy transition in Mozambique (€13m), expanding renewables in Congo (€3.5m), and developing solar in Ghana (€2m). In addition, in Central Africa, the programme will assist the Central African Power Pool (CAPP) and support a feasibility study for the Friendship Loop (‘Boucle de l'Amitié') interconnection line between Pointe Noire, Brazzaville (Congo) and Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) (€3.3m).
The package represents a step forward in the ‘Scaling Up Renewables in Africa' campaign to raise global awareness and mobilise public and private investments for clean energy generation and access across Africa.
