The South African state-owned power utility Eskom has issued a call for proposals from experienced companies to establish an independent subsidiary to expedite the deployment of renewable energy solutions in the country. The company expects to receive proposals to set up renewable energy businesses in South Africa, which will be evaluated based on their past experiences in establishing renewable energy companies, their number of public-private partnerships (PPPs) and special purpose vehicles (SPVs) that have created tangible projects. In addition, Eskom plans to look at the bidder’s expertise in the independent power producer (IPP) business model and financial structuring, technical capabilities, and knowledge of the sector. The selected new subsidiary is expected to operate independently from the main Eskom Group to enable better governance.
In addition, Eskom aims to implement energy storage systems, such as battery energy storage systems (BESS) and pumped hydro, to ensure overall security of supply and sustainably meet the growing electricity demand in South Africa. The tender will close on 7 May 2025.
Eskom has an executable initial pipeline of at least 2 GW of clean energy projects by 2026 and has developed a pipeline of more than 20 GW of clean energy projects to diversify its energy mix. South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
