Equinor bids for two offshore wind power projects in New York (US)

Equinor has submitted bids into New York’s second offshore wind solicitation requesting proposals for up to 2.5 GW of offshore wind and a multi-port infrastructure plan. Equinor’s proposal includes two projects: Empire Wind Phase 2 and Beacon Wind. Empire Wind would be located southeast of Long Island and is being developed in two phases with a potential total installed capacity of more than 2 GW (816 MW first phase already under development), while Beacon Wind is located east of Montauk Point and south of Nantucket and has the potential to be developed with a total capacity of more than 2.4 GW.

In September 2020, Equinor signed an agreement with BP to sell a 50% stake in the Empire Wind and Beacon Wind assets for US$1.1bn. Equinor will remain the operator of the projects in these leases through the development, construction and operations phases. BP’s acquisition of stakes in Empire Wind and Beacon Wind is expected to close in early 2021, subject to customary conditions and authority approval. The two companies will also establish a strategic partnership in the US offshore wind sector.
