EPC contract signed for a new 1.2 GW coal-fired plant in Bangladesh

Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with a three-party consortium including Sumitomo Corp., Toshiba Corp. and IHI Corp for the construction of a 1,200 MW coal-fired ultra supercritical (USC) coal-fired thermal power plant as well as a deep sea port on Matarbari Island (Bay of Bengal) in southeastern Bangladesh. The plant facility is expected to use imported coal as fuel and will consist of two 600 MW units while the sea port will be constructed adjacent to it.

Sumitomo will be in charge of civil work and auxiliary equipment as well as for port construction including dredging works while Toshiba will supply and install the steam turbines and the generators. IHI will be responsible for providing and installing the boilers.

The project is expected to cost about Yen500bn (US$4.57bn) will be financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The construction is expected to start in August 2017 and the plant will come onstream in July 2024. Once completed, it will contribute to more than 10% of the total generation capacity of Bangladesh.
