The ENSI has endorsed the Mühleberg shutdown programme (Switzerland)

The Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) has endorsed BKW's (Bernische Kraftwerke AG) plans for the decommissioning of the 373 MW Mühleberg nuclear power plant in December 2019. According to the ENSI, BKW has convincingly demonstrated that safety will be ensured during the facility decommissioning phase.

The Mühleberg plant started operations in November 1972 and covers around 5% of the Swiss electricity consumption requirements (2,964 GWh). The group had decided in late 2013 to shut the Mühleberg reactor in December 2019, instead of the earlier planned 2022 due to "uncertainty surrounding political and regulatory trends". The shutdown is still set for December 2019 while the decommissioning phase is now expected to start in late September 2020.

Switzerland will phase out several nuclear reactors in the years to come. They will be progressively shut down between 2019 (365 MW Beznau-1 and Mühleberg) and 2031 (365 MW Beznau-2).
