French gas and electricity group Engie has outlined plans to quadruple its operational power generation capacity across Africa from the current 3,000 MW up to 13,000 MW over the next decade, most of which will be added through acquisitions instead of being built as greenfield projects. So far, the group is studying some 40 projects in businesses ranging from large-scale infrastructure and power plants to residential solar and mini-grids.
At the end of 2018, Engie had stakes in power assets in Egypt (263 MW under construction), Morocco (1,566 MW operational, 2 TWh generated in 2018), and South Africa (1,095 MW operational that generated 0.7 TWh and 100 MW under construction). Engie's renewable capacity across the continent is also growing with the commissioning of new renewable projects such as the 100 MW Kathu concentrated solar plant (CSP) in the North Cape Province, South Africa. Kathu is the first CSP project developed by Engie and it is equipped withparabolic technology and a 5-hour molten salt energy storage system that enables heat from the plant to be stored and electricity to be generated in the absence of sunlight. The facility has a set 20-year PPA under the framework of the country's stop-start Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPP).
