Engie and The Abraaj Group plan to build 1 GW of wind projects (India)

The French state-held company Engie and the Dubai-based investor The Abraaj Group have announced a partnership regarding the construction of a 1 GW wind park platform in India. The project will be built across several Indian states but no other details have been provided so far.

This move fits into the current governmental strategy, which intends to accelerate the growth of the domestic wind power generating capacity. The Indian renewable energy sector continues to grow rapidly and is expected to continue at a rate of 9% per year until 2020, underpinned by an increasing domestic demand. The Indian government is targeting 175 GW of renewable energies by 2022, including 100 GW of solar power, 10 GW from biomass and 60 GW of wind power capacity, which will require to double of the current wind installed capacity of 32 GW over the next five years.

Engie already has a solid foothold in India. In 2016, the company generated 1.2 TWh and reported 170 MW in operation and 290 MW under construction in the country. At the beginning of 2017, the company won a contract for the construction of two 70 MW solar power plants in the State of Rajasthan via its subsidiary company Solairedirect.
