Italian energy group Enel has broken ground on the 716 MW Lagoa dos Ventos wind park in the municipalities of Lagoa do Barro do Piauí, Queimada Nova and Dom Inocêncio, in Brazil’s northeastern state of Piauí. The construction will be undertaken by Enel's local subsidiary Enel Green Power Brasil (EGPB). Estimated to cost BRL3bn (around US$800m), the power plant is scheduled to enter into commercial operations in 2021.
The park will entail 230 wind turbines and is expected to generate over 3.3 TWh/year of electricity. Out of the project's total capacity, 510 MW were awarded to EGPB in Brazil’s A-6 public tender in December 2017 and are supported by 20-year power and purchase agreements (PPAs) with a cluster of distribution companies operating in the country’s regulated market. The production of the remaining 206 MW will be sold on the free market for sale to retail customers.
Enel's subsidiaries EGPB and Enel Brasil currently manage 2.9 GW of renewable capacity in the country, of which 842 MW from wind power, 820 MW from solar photovoltaic (PV) and 1,269 MW from hydropower assets. Besides, EGPB has a pipeline about 1 GW of renewable projects in execution which were awarded in the 2017 tenders.
