Enel connects 1,089 MW of solar PV capacity to the Mexican power grid

Italian power company Enel has completed and connected to the Mexican grid around 1,089 MW of new solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity through its subsidiary Enel Green Power Mexico (EGPM). The capacity comprises namely the 828 MW Villanueva solar park located in Viesca, in the state of Coahuila and the 260 MW Don José solar park located in San Luis de la Paz, in the state of Guanajuato. The investment in the two projects reached US$950m, of which US$710m for Villanueva and US$240m for Don José.

The two projects were awarded to Enel in March 2016, in the first long-term auction in Mexico, following the country's Energy Reform. Enel implemented a 10% capacity extension option included in the energy sales contracts for both plants, raising the capacity of the Villanueva project from 754 MW to 828 MW and that of Don José from 238 MW to 260 MW.

Enel Green Power Mexico currently operates 1,816 MW of power generation capacity, of which 675 MW for wind energy, 1,089 MW for solar capacity and 53 MW for hydropower capacity.
