ENEC's Barakah-1 nuclear project officially completed (UAE)

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has officially completed the first unit of the Barakah project, Barakah-1, in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). The next step for the preparations for operation is the granting of an operating licence from the UAE's nuclear regulator, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

The UAE’s first nuclear power plant, which will be operated by Nawah Energy, a joint venture between ENEC and South Korea's Kepco, includes four 1,400 MW reactors (first export for the South Korean APR-1400 reactor), for a total capacity of 5,600 MW. The facility is being built by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), a unit of Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco). The three remaining units (namely Barakah-2, Barakah-3 and Barakah-4) are respectively 92%, 81% and 67% complete and are all scheduled for completion by 2020. Once operational, the power plant will cover almost 25% of the domestic electricity needs.
