ENEC starts testing phase at Barakah-1 nuclear project (UAE)

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) reports that the Barakah nuclear project is progressing steadily and is currently complete at 87%. The first unit has entered the testing phase prior to regulatory review and receipt of the Operating License from the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). The second unit (Barakah-2) is 92% complete, while the third and fourth units are 81% and 66% complete, respectively.

The UAE’s first nuclear power plant will have a total capacity of 5,600 MW and is located at Barakah in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. Once complete, the power plant will cover almost 25% of the domestic electricity needs. The facility is being built by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), a unit of Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco). The facility operator will be Nawah Energy, a joint venture between ENEC and Kepco.
