Endesa won 953 MW of grid connection for renewables in Aragon (Spain)

The Spanish power utility Endesa, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power, has been awarded the rights to connect to the grid 953 MW of renewables in Andorra, Teruel region, Aragon (eastern Spain) in an area where the company previously operated a coal-fired power plant following a tender organised by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge . The provisional award in the grid-connection tender also gives Endesa the option to extend connection up to 1.2 GW at the 400 kV Mudejar node, that previously served the Andorra power plant before it was taken offline in 2020. Endesa will use acquired free capacity to develop a hybrid complex made up of five wind and five solar parks backed by a battery energy storage system (BESS). Surplus electricity from this setup will be used to power an electrolyser to produce green hydrogen. The development of the project is expected to bring €1.2bn in investments.

In September 2022, Endesa unveild a €2.7bn investment plan for the development of 1.3 GW of wind energy in the Galicia region, meant to replace a 1.4 GW close coal-fired power plant. The plan includes the dismantling of the coal plant and the installation of new industrial projects on the site, which will happen simultaneously with the development of the wind projects. In April 2022, the company committed to close all of its coal-fired power plants by 2027.
