The German energy group Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) has acquired a 37.5% interest in three offshore wind projects off the Changhua region of Taiwan, with a combined capacity of approximately 2,000 MW. The projects will be developed jointly with the Taiwanese project developer Swancor Renewable and the Australian investor Macquarie Capital and EnBW will take the lead on the technical project development. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals of the Cartel Authority of Taiwan.
In the meantime, the Danish power company Ørsted (former DONG Energy) has received environmental approval from the Taiwanese Environmental Protection Administration for the development of another four offshore wind projects, also located off Changhua County in Taiwan, which will have a combined capacity of 2,400 MW. The four facilities are subject to a final investment decision (FID) and their construction could start as early as 2019.
Taiwan aims to develop 5,500 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2025, when nuclear power will be phased out. The allocation of the required grid connection capacity is planned for the first quarter 2018.
