EIB lends US$87m to support three solar plants worth 1 GWp (Mexico)

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has agreed to provide financing worth US$87m (€75m) in support of three Mexican solar power plants with a total combined capacity of 1,088 MWp in the states of Guanajuato and Coahuila States. The three solar parks comprise the 828 MW Villanueva solar park located in Viesca, in the state of Coahuila and the 260 MW Don José solar park located in San Luis de la Paz, in the state of Guanajuato. They are owned by the Italian power company Enel through its subsidiary Enel Green Power Mexico (EGPM).

The investment in the two projects reached US$950m, of which US$710m for Villanueva and US$240m for Don José. They were awarded to Enel in March 2016 as part of the first long-term auction in Mexico. Later on, Enel implemented a 10% capacity extension option included in the energy sales contracts for both plants, raising the capacity of the Villanueva project from 754 MW to 828 MW and that of Don José from 238 MW to 260 MW. They were eventually commissioned in October 2018.
