EDF signs binding agreements for the Nachtigal hydro project (Cameroon)

The government of Cameroon, French energy group EDF and IFC (member of the World Bank Group) have signed the final and binding agreements for the construction of the 420 MW Nachtigal hydropower plant on the Sanaga river near the Nachtigal Falls (Cameroon) as well as the operation of the plant for a 35 years period. The agreements also include the construction of a 50 km power transmission line.

The construction of the €1.2bn (US$1.36bn) project is slated to begin by the end of 2018 upon financial closing and the commissioning is expected for 2023. In August 2018, the Belgian company BESIX was awarded a contract to design and build the project.

The Nachtigal hydropower project will be fully-held and operated by NHPC (Nachtigal Hydro Power Company), which is in turn owned by EDF (40%), IFC (30%) and the Republic of Cameroon (30%). According to EDF, the facility's expected power generation of nearly 3 TWh/year is likely to cover 30% of the country’s power demand. The power generated by the project will be sold to the grid operator via a Power Purchase Agreement at a competitive tariff but a significant part of the power generation will be used primarily to supply power for aluminium production.
