Ecuador announces procurement for 2.1 GW in new energy projects

The government of Ecuador has unveiled its plans to launch a tender for 2.1 GW in new electricity projects (PV Magazine, 07/01/2026). Aiming to diversify its energy sources and distribute energy across different regions in the country, Ecuador expects to award new electricity projects through a public procurement process.

  • Among the planned projects for auction are several large-scale solar PV projects (1.5 GW Zapotillo and 200 MW Santa Elena, among others) and about 970 MW of non-conventional renewable sources to compliment Ecuador’s hydroelectric generation.
  • Projects are expected to start operations between 2027 and 2028.
  • The procurement process will be open to national and international private developers.

Ecuador is highly reliant on its hydro capacities, which represent about 60% of its total installed capacity (5.4 GW out of 8.9 GW in 2024) and over 66% of its power mix (34.5 TWh in 2024), according to Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 data.
