DONG Energy has decided to extend the service life of Unit 3 of its Studstrup 700 MW cogeneration power station in Aarhus. Under the extension the plant can continue operation until 2030. The total cost of the investment in the service life extension is approx. DKK 550m (€67m), 50% of which will be borne by AffaldVarme Aarhus. AffaldVarme Aarhus is part of Aarhus Municipality’s Technical Services and Environment.
The investment is part of DONG Energy’s strategy to convert its central power stations to biomass. The specific investment in Studstrup power station will enable the plant to continue to supply heat to Aarhus and the surrounding area and will prepare it for incorporation in a subsequent biomass conversion. The power station unit includes a number of components that have reached the end of their service lives after almost 30 years’ operation and therefore either need to be replaced or refurbished to ensure that Studstrup power station can continue in operation.
The service life extension is expected to be completed at the end of 2013.
