Denmark selects site for new 800 MW Thor offshore wind project

The Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate has selected a site for the construction of the 800 MW Thor offshore wind project that will be built between 2024 and 2027. It will be located at least 20 km off Nissum Fjord on the country’s west coast in the North Sea. A tender for the project's construction will be held later in 2019. The offshore wind project could be subsidy-free and built without public support, set aside the connection costs. Thor is also designed to be the first of three 800 MW offshore wind parks to go online before 2030.

Denmark currently has several offshore wind projects either in construction or approved, namely 407 MW Horns Rev 3, 605 MW Kriegers Flak, 180 MW Vesterhav Syd and 170 MW Vesterhav Nord, all expected to be commissioned between mid-2019 and 2021. With the development of Thor and the two other 800 MW projects, the country is on its way to fully cover its electricity consumption and up to 50% of its energy needs with renewable energy by 2030 and completely phase out fossil fuels by 2050.
