Denmark considers new island to connect 10 GW of offshore wind capacity

The government of Denmark has initiated a project to create one or more energy islands with at least 10 GW offshore wind capacity. DKK65m (€8.7m) has been allocated from the 2020 budget to finance preliminaries studies to find possible locations for the project. The screening will include areas in the Kattegat, the Baltic and the North Sea. The project will cost DKK200-300bn (€27.8-40.1bn), covered in majority by private investors. No deadline has been set.

In 2018, wind accounted for 41% of Denmark's electricity demand. Denmark is planning three new offshore wind projects by 2030, totaling 2.4 GW. In June 2019, the government has reached an agreement with all the parties in the Danish parliament to support the green transition to 2030. The deal includes “massive investment” to achieve the target of 100% green power by 2030, as well as a pledge to reduce the number of onshore wind turbines by 70% over the next decade.

In December 2019, the Parliament has adopted a legally binding national Climate Act with an objective to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 70% by 2030 (compared to the 1990 level) and towards net-zero emission by 2050.
