Democratic Republic of the Congo awards 3 gas blocks to US and Canadian companies

The Ministry of Hydrocarbons of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has selected three companies to exploit three gas blocks in Lake Kivu, following a call for tenders launched in July 2022 that included 27 oil blocks and 3 gas blocks in three sedimentary basins of the DRC, namely the Coastal Basin, the Basin of the Central Cuvette and the Basins of the West Branch of the East African Rift.

The Makelele Block was awarded to RED (part of the US Symbion Power group), the Lwandjofu Block to Alfajiri Energy Corporation (Canada), and the Idjwi Block to Winds Exploration and Production (US). The production sharing contracts (PSCs) are expected to be signed by the end of January 2023 and gas production could start at the Makelele block as early as 2024.

The DRC is estimated to hold 278 mbl of crude oil and NGL proved reserves and 1 bcm of gas reserves. Its crude oil production has been averaging 1.1 Mt/year since 2010 and is gas production is null.
