Crown Estate Scotland (UK) targets 10 GW of new offshore wind capacity

Crown Estate Scotland has initiated a new round of offshore wind leasing in Scotland (United Kingdom), targeting up to 10 GW. The ScotWind leasing round intends to attract £8bn (€8.9bn) of new investments. Developers can register interest in obtaining an option agreement with Crown Estate Scotland, which could lead to leases to build offshore wind projects. Applications are requested to have an intended capacity of at least 100 MW.

In 2011, the Scottish government raised its renewable electricity target for power consumption to 100% by 2020 (up from 50%, as this target was met in 2015). Scotland has set a target to be carbon neutral by 2045. In addition, the UK government plans to raise offshore wind capacity to 40 GW by 2030 and supports the development of floating wind turbines. The national target is to increase the share of renewables in final energy consumption to 15% in 2020 (11% achieved in 2018).
