South African Department of Energy has selected Vesta as preferred supplier for 5 wind projects totaling 297 MW. In the countries second round tender the following projects have been awarded :
West Coast 1, 94 MW, Developer: GDF Suez/IPR
SA Tsitsikamma, 95.33 MW, Developer: Cennergi
Grahamstown, 24.60 MW, Developer: EDF EN France
Grassridge, 61.50 MW, Developer: EDF EN France
Chaba, 21.53 MW, Developer: EDF EN France
Moreover, in the same tender award, Acciona and Aveng will build, own and operate a 135 MW wind park and a 74 MW photovoltaic solar plant. Acciona Energy will take a 51% stake in the projects, Aveng 29%, and two social promotion entities from South Africa will contribute the remaining 20%.
The Gouda wind park will be built in the municipality of Drakenstein, Western Cape Province (in the west of the country). It will be equipped with 46 3 MW Acciona turbines, totaling 138 MW of installed capacity. Construction work will start in 2013 for completion in 2014.
The PV plant, called Sishen, will be located in the municipality of Dibeng, in Northern Cape Province (in the south-west of the country). Building work will start in 2013 and will be completed in mid-2014.
The two facilities will be Acciona’s first investments in South Africa. Building work will start in 2013 and will be completed in mid-2014.
Finally, Suzlon has been named the preferred bidder to supply turbines for a 138 MW Amakhala Emoyeni Phase-1 project in Eastern Cape. The wind project is being developed by Cennergi, a joint venture company between Exxaro Resources and Tata Power Company
66 units of Suzlon's S97-2.1MW turbines will be delivered under a full engineering, procurement and construction agreement. Work on the project is expected to begin in early 2013.
