Connecticut (US) awards its first offshore wind power project

The Connecticut state regulators (United States) has awarded its first offshore wind project and has selected the wind power developer Deepwater Wind for the construction of a 200 MW offshore project between between Martha’s Vineyard and Montauk (New York). Deepwater Wind was one of the three firms that submitted bids to the state authorities in August 2017. The Block Island Wind Farm project consisting of 25 turbines will break ground in 2021, with first power scheduled for 2023.

The US offshore wind industry is moving forward at a quick pace: in total, the offshore wind power projects of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts have a total combined capacity of 1,400 MW. In May 2018, Massachusetts and Rhode Island jointly awarded 1,200 MW of new offshore wind capacity to two projects, of which the 800 MW offshore project south of Martha’s Vineyard, developed by the Danish fund management company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and the US energy services company Avangrid Renewables and the 400 MW wind project to be developed by Deepwater Wind in Rhode Island.
