The Colombian Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced a new auction scheme for long-term contracting of electricity (Colombian government press release, 22/04/2026). Under the scheme, the government plans to award 15-year energy contracts to start delivering electricity in 2030. The scheme is open to solar projects, and it includes for the first time hybrid projects with storage to supply energy during peak-hours. The call aims to prevent demand coverage risks under “climate stress scenarios” such as El Niño phenomenon. The auction is planned to launch before 31 July 2026, and it will be open to generators, self-generators and marketers. The country also plans an additional auction in 2035 to expand long-term planning.
The scheme is aligned with Colombia’s strategic commitment to guarantee the reliability of its energy system while also expanding the participation of Non-Conventional Sources of Renewable Energy (FNCER) and consolidating a more resilient, diversified and low-carbon energy mix.
At the end of 2024, Colombia had installed 21 GW of electricity capacity, with hydroelectricity accounting for 62%, followed by gas (12%) and oil (9%).
