Colombia has awarded contracts for 995 MW of solar capacity and 100 MW of BESS in its latest long-term electricity auction. (Colombian government press release, 29/07/2026).
The auction resulted in the award of 270 MW of solar capacity and 100 MW of BESS in the first bidding round, followed by a further 725 MW of solar capacity in the second round. All contracts have a 15-year duration and are scheduled to begin on 1 January 2030. According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the awarded capacity is expected to cover around 3% of Colombia’s regulated electricity demand.
This auction marks the first time that large-scale battery storage has been included in a power procurement process in the country and participants reportedly submitted bids for more than 15,400 MWh/day of BESS capacity.
According to the ministry, Colombia now has nearly 11 GW of new power capacity either in operation, under construction or already awarded. The government has also requested an urgent reconfiguration auction aimed at strengthening firm capacity and improving long-term electricity system reliability.
